Check the base metal first — brass holds plating far better than iron and will not rust. Then look at the stone setting: prongs and jeweller's adhesive last, plain glue does not. Finally, ask whether the piece is lacquer sealed, which is what stops the gold tone from turning dull.

Jewellery goes on last, after perfume, makeup and hairspray. Wipe each piece with a dry cotton cloth before it goes back in its pouch, keep pieces separated so enamel does not chip, and never soak plated jewellery in water or liquid polish.
